How to install MUGEN characters and stages

In classic M.U.G.E.N, adding a character means unzipping it into the right folder and editing select.def by hand. In rugen it is one step: put the file in a folder and start the game.

Characters

  1. Download a character. It usually comes as a .zip or .rar.
  2. Put the archive, or the unpacked folder, into rugen’s chars/ folder. No need to unzip.
  3. Start rugen. The character is converted once into a single .rgc file and appears on the select screen.

While a big roster converts, the title screen is already usable: unready fighters show dimmed with a progress ring, and picking one moves it to the front of the queue.

The fighter’s id is its file name without the extension, so chars/kfm.zip is kfm. Ids are what you type on the command line: rugen play kfm starts a quick match against the computer.

Stages

Same thing in stages/: drop the zip or folder and start the game. rugen ships four stages of its own (Training Room EX, Ink Dojo, Ink Arena and Night Festival), so you can play before adding any.

Screenpacks and themes

Put a screenpack folder in themes/, next to chars/. It appears in OPTIONS → INTERFACE. See screenpacks and themes.

When a character does not load

  • RAR files need unrar, 7z or bsdtar installed. Zips and folders always work.
  • Run rugen check <id> to list anything the character uses that rugen does not support yet.
  • Run rugen verify <id> before playing online: it reports the fighter’s fairness verdict.
  • Still stuck? Post the output on the help board.

Where to find characters

The rugen fighter catalogue lists fighters published as GitHub repositories, each verified by the engine and downloadable from its release page. Making your own? Start from the character template and read making a character in 2026.

The long-running MUGEN community sites also host thousands of characters. Respect each creator’s terms: many ask not to re-upload their work.
